Thiruvananthapuram celebrates Friendship Day

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Literally, this day, friendship is worn on the sleeve. Wristbands, hailing the virtue of camaraderie, lay smug around your hands on Sunday.
For once, it is that time of the year when for once friendship turned ‘tangible’ - and the new generation finds it ubercool to flaunt it.
Bands fastened round one another’s wrists, they headed to favourite hangouts like Ambrosia to celebrate over cakes and icecreams.
"We went to Ambrosia and had lots of pastries, but not before my friend Nisha landed at home with a surprise gift,” says Pooja Mohan of LBS College of Engineering, Poojappura.
Her little sister Teja Mohan shows off the bands her buddies tied on her. Had it not been a Sunday, we would have had more fun, more bands and more sweets, says the class VIII student of St Mary’s Central School, Poojappura.
It was a very special day for Ananthu G S, a plus-one student of Sainik School, Kazhakkoottam. Just a day before, he had walked down the ramp during a personality contest at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan School. He had roared a ‘Happy friendship day in advance’ from the ramp.
It had made the day for the young lad, instantly winning hearts. “I had congrats showering on me when I was back at the Sainik School hostel,” he said.
“My friends greeted me right at the stroke of midnight and we exchanged friendship bands,” he says.
The boys are not allowed to walk out of Sainik School campus. But the friendship day ritual has made inroads even into the uniformed rigidity there, as is evident from the bands which come up for sale at the STD booth on the campus.
Generally, the day saw more opulent celebrations with tables getting booked in advance at Ambrosia and All Spice, Kuravankonam. Youngsters gathered round in these places and raised toasts to the special bonding.

Friends are really one of the most important asset of any one’s life.  You are lucky even if you have only one good friend.  It does not matter if you have thousands of friends, what matters at the end of the day is whether you have any good friend or not? So, if you have any good friend, take the occasion to tell him how important he/she is for you.
